Why Clean Your Air Ducts?

We have talked at length about how to clean your air ducts & ventilation systems (air handler, air conditioning system, air ducts, etc.) to remove mold from your home or workplace, but it is important to know why you should be concerned about a clean system in the first place.

With growing awareness about health and related issues, people are becoming aware that indoor pollution is a serious health and safety concern. The quality of your indoor air is very important – the poorer it is, the more prone to diseases you will be.

We have already discussed how mold is common in heating and cooling (HVAC) systems. Imagine this: if most of your air is passing through a moldy or leaking HVAC system, what are you really breathing? Perhaps, you are increasing the risk of your exposure to molds that are beyond “normal” background levels. Exposure to above normal background levels of mold may increase the risk of a physiological response in certain individuals. Individuals suffering from a compromised immune system, respiratory ailment, or allergies are most likely to be affected by acute or chronic mold exposure that exceeds normal background levels.

Homeowners are increasingly spending on products and services for improving the quality of their air. The quality of indoor air is an important concern, and most people only decide to have their heating and air conditioning systems inspected when they feel that air quality is becoming poor.

In a typical U.S. home, about 40 pounds of dust and debris is created. While you clean a lot of it out through your regular cleaning initiatives, the air ducts remain largely ignored simply because they are difficult to reach and therefore dust and debris continues to settle in these areas.

Your HVAC system takes a lot of beating over the years. Imagine all the dust, dander, chemicals and other air pollutants settling in the air ducts. Over a period of time, all of this material recirculates in your home or workplace, building up even more contaminants.

Think of it as not vacuuming or dusting your house for years! Not a pretty site, is it?

Dave Toht from HouseLogic talks about why and how dirty air ducts are not a great idea for the health of your family and your home.

It is important to consider that a dirty air conditioning unit and air duct system does not always mean unhealthy air circulation in your home or workplace.  But it could. A dirty system can also lead to inefficient operation, increased energy costs, and system malfunctions. All of this could lead to big dollars being lost to the energy companies and air conditioning repair companies.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy contaminants in your HVAC can waste about 25% to 40% energy used for the heating or cooling of your home. Not only do you waste energy, but also the contaminants cause the HVAC system to work even harder, therefore shortening their life.

Isn’t it much easier then, to have your air handling (air conditioning) unit and air ducts inspected and or cleaned periodically? What would you rather prefer – spending some money every now and then for prevented maintenance and hygiene, or spend large sums of money to correct a poor situation that could have been prevented?
